Choosing a right mover

Moving is considered as a nerve wrecking and one of the worst nightmares that one can face. However, when assisted with the right mover the job becomes less threatening and taxing.

But, the million dollar question is ‘How to choose the right mover?’

One should keep in mind key guidelines mentioned below:

1. Get references from friends, neighbours and co-workers they have used and are satisfied with the job.
2. One should always deal with a licensed moving company. It should be insured since most of the reputed companies offer some kind of insurance against damage to the goods or premises.
3. Ask about the firm’s experience and client list. Call a few clients to verify references.
4. Spend some time talking with each moving company. It’s a good sign if they take the time to understand your moving needs. Ask questions. If the company representative isn’t friendly and helpful on the phone, call someone else.
5. Get estimates from more than one company. After receiving several estimates, go with one that both meets your budget and that you feel comfortable working with.

Make sure to have the following information ready:

1. The addresses of your old residence and new apartment
2. The floor of your current residence
3. The floor of your new apartment
4. Whether or not there is an elevator
5. Whether there is space for the truck to park in front of the building
6. Which hours you're allowed to move (some apartment buildings restrict moving hours to certain times). This can affect how much traffic there will be.

When you’re ready to sign the contract:

1. Insist on a guaranteed price in writing that includes guaranteed pick-up and delivery dates.
2. The contract should include a guarantee of how many hours the job will take, allowing an overrun of no more than 10 percent.
3. Without a written guaranteed price, you could be subject to any number of additional fees that could potentially run into losses.

Choosing a company that is reliable, courteous and efficient makes the stressful event an ‘adventurous’ experience.
