It is quite often while moving to a new home; one has to take utmost care of one’s belongings to avoid any damage or loss. Therefore, it is always recommended to get your things properly insured by good companies. The licensed movers who transport your goods should provide proper liability for the value of your goods; but at the same time, you should also be aware of the total amount of protection provided by the licensed movers and any other additional charges levied thereon.
While choosing upon the best moving insurance coverage option, you must consider the following three key points:
In case of Basis Carrier Liability, you get a limited amount of 60 cents per pound for a particular good. It is basically referred to as the ‘released value’, which is the minimum amount of liability required as per the law for the transportation of goods from one state to another. In case you are moving locally, you can seek a mover to know the nominal liability amount of one item in your state.
For Declared Value Protection, the minimum charge applicable is USD 1.25 times of the total weight of your shipment, on the basis of the depreciated value of an item. The delivery of goods is valued at the amount of goods declared by you at the time of contract. Through this type of coverage, the mover is responsible to make the payment for the entire shipment, amounting to USD 1.25 per pound of the weight of your shipment. However, if the total shipment exceeds the liability amount of USD 1.25 per pound of the weight of your shipment, you are eligible to receive full replacement liability. It is advised that you completely understand the coverage option you choose, since the movers are usually allowed to limit their liability for any loss or damage to goods holding extraordinary value.
In the event of Full Replacement Value, the liability amount you get is subject to a minimum charge of USD 3.50 or USD 4 of the total weight of your shipment, depending upon the insurance company. Some mover insurance companies offer Minimum Full Replacement Value coverage too. Therefore, it is you who has to decide the minimum amount of coverage required for your moving goods, and thereby the insurance company. Full Replacement Value is a sum of the cost of replacement and the repair of a damaged item. If you release your shipment for transportation at 60 cents per pound per item, the mover will provide you with the amount of liability insurance as requested by you. Any loss or damage will be compensated by the mover but not more than 60 cents per pound per item, while the balance of the amount can be recovered by the insurance company.
There is also another way to obtain extra coverage for your moving goods by purchasing ‘extra insurance’ from your mover with an independent insurance company, to get your goods covered for the complete duration of the move.
