Anger, frustration and confusion are few emotions connected when the need for ‘moving’ and ‘relocating’ occurs. It is indeed a difficult and stressful experience not just for kids or adolescents but also for adults who need to ensure that their children feel protected and secured in the new environment.
The family members need to go through the pains and efforts while selling and securing a new apartment, packing and transporting family goods. Children need extra attention. The entire family needs to adjust to all the differences in a new location.
There are numerous things to pack and there are chances that few things might get over looked. In order to overcome such situations, one should be methodical and systematically plan things and most importantly effectively learn to manage stress.
Moving means you need to take special care of your body. Moving can be stressful. Therefore one needs to take out time for rest, relaxation or even a five-minute break. Breathing can save your life. Deep breathing increases oxygen intake and balances immune system.
It’s hard thinking of leaving your loved ones behind and making new friends. Talking about the concerns, worries and anxiety with a close friend or family member would help defeating one’s grief. Plan good-bye dinners or brunches or coffee with small groups of family and friends and make future plans to visit.
Always remember there are numerous ways to keep in touch with your loved ones either through emails, social networking sites, SMS’s etc.
Visiting the new area and getting information about new social contacts – clubs, libraries, restaurants or place of worship is strongly recommended.
One needs to mentally prepare themselves to settle and adjust to the living and lifestyle of the new location.
People who manage change well are those who can make and accept changes in themselves. When a major change such as relocation appears on the horizon, they are not immune from normal feelings like fear, sadness and anger. But by facing and expressing these feelings, they move toward the future with hope and a sense of adventure.
