Office Furniture Packing

Packing office furniture is not much different from packing domestic furniture. However, office furniture differs from home furniture in many aspects. Hence, it requires specialized packing to ensure trouble-free moving.

As far as possible, disassemble all the furniture that allows you to do so. The furniture parts should be suitably padded and secured firmly. Items such as sofas and desks can be placed on end in trucks. If the drawers are locked, the items inside will remain secure but they will not stay in place. Hence, it is better to empty the drawers, including very large filing cabinets, and leave them unlocked.

If your office has modular furniture, it is necessary to plan in advance for approvals and extra costs. A change in furniture layout might be necessary in the new location. You need the services of a furniture company to do this as also to disassemble and reassemble them. Some of the furniture may be connected to walls or utilities which entails consulting Facilities Management Staff. They can also approve the furniture layout for the new office for Fire Code and Accessibility compliance. Such a layout will be very helpful for the movers to arrange them accordingly or they may do it any way they like with the result that you will have to do it all over again. FMS can also help if the office furniture is wired for electrical power by providing you with an estimate for the electricians to connect and reconnect the wiring. Such an estimate from them is needed if the furniture is wired for data or phone connections to connect and disconnect telecom wiring.

You must back up all data before packing and moving your computers. Use the original packages and pad them at the bottom and all around. You must pack them in tight-fit boxes. The same should be done to the printer and all other peripherals. Other electronic equipment should also be similarly packed.

Files and documents should be packed flat in suitable moisture resistant boxes. Care should be taken not to overload them.

By following these guidelines, moving office furniture is done smoothly and efficiently with the minimum of trouble or confusion.
