Things you need to know before unpacking in a new home

Moving is a daunting task that no one considers a joyful experience. Frankly, it’s a major pain. The hardest thing is getting started. Therefore, the key is to start planning to ensure the process goes as smooth as possible.

• It is essential to contact utility companies and schedule all disconnection at the old home and connection of them at the new home. It should be disconnected the day after you leave and connected the day before you arrive.
• You should also pop into your local post office and fill out the forms needed to have your mail forwarded.
• You need to decide if you are going to employ a moving company or if you are going to rent a moving truck and do it yourself. You should explore all of your options to see what works best for you and your family.
• Arrangements for cleaning and repair of furniture, drapes, and carpeting should be done.
• Check with your insurance company to see how your possessions are covered during transit.
• Keep in mind to check with local authorities about restrictions.
• Collect all important records- personal and family records, including medical and dental, veterinary and school records; legal and financial documents; birth certificates, passports and insurance documents.
