BestMoverspackers.com suggests the following pointers for packing consumables and heavy household goods:
Canned Food and other Non-Frozen Food
All canned food items and non-frozen food items should be packed in a standing position. Make sure no single carton holds in excess of 30 cans. Perishable foods should not be transported, but consumed at once. Pack the glass containers and boxed food items in small, separate cartons.
Frozen Food Items and Plants
As advised before, never move perishable food items to avoid any spoilage. Such delicate and perishable items are normally forbidden from transportation carrying a distance of more than 150 miles, and if accepted, the delivery is not possible within 24 hours from the loading of such goods. Such frozen goods are packed in a freezer before the shipment takes off, and is kept at normal deep-freeze temperature.
Medicines
Medicines are recommended to be sealed with masking tape. Small cartons should be used to pack them off upright. You can also carry a few medicines with yourself during travel, if required.
Barbecue Grills and Propane Tank
The barbeque grates and briquettes should be wrapped up individually in newspapers, or even placed into a grocery bag. Pack all the parts in a carton. You can fill the carton from its sides with paper to lessen the movement of contents and the noise generated thereon. Drain the propane tanks before you put them off on the moving vans.
Flammables and Combustibles
Do not pack any flammable liquids or aerosol cans. Climate changes and air pressure can make them cause leakage or even explosion. Secondly, if you still pack flammables and combustible items, any damage caused thereon to the shipment or any person, shall be borne by you and not your mover.
Electronic Equipments
All valuable electronic equipments, like personal computer or videotape recorder, in your home should be better stored in their original cartons if available. In case you have not kept their original boxes, you may use strong and corrugated cartons for their storage. Put extra padding at the bottom of the carton to protect the equipment from any damage. You may also place extra padding between the carton and the equipment for additional protection. Cords should be wrapped up separately and then packed between the padded equipment and the carton. Label every carton, carrying electronic equipment for identification purpose.
Mirrors and valuable Paintings
Inform your agent about all your valuable painting to take special care of. Mirrors, pictures, frames and paintings should be wrapped and placed on the edge side of cartons. Large paintings and pictures should also be put on the edge sides of strong cardboard containers. The dresser mirrors should be tapped diagonally to protect them from damage and placed in special cartons by the movers. Avoid placing newspapers directly against paintings.
